Gender Roles and the Issue in Schools in the U.S.

Today on Facebook, this article came across my feed: .

This article made my temper boil, and I’m pretty good at controlling my temper nowadays. But now that I am calmer, I want to post my thoughts about it. I hope you all comment so we can have an adult conversation about it.

To begin, gender roles have been a hot subject lately. Yes, it has been a hot subject for a very long time thanks to the women who fought to get women more rights than we used to have. However, due to the LGBT+ community getting rights, FINALLY, the fight for gender roles and gender types has turned into a wildfire.

According to the World Health Organization: “Gender refers to the characteristics of women, men, girls and boys that are socially constructed. This includes norms, behaviours and roles associated with being a woman, man, girl, or boy, as well as relationships with each other. As a social construct, gender varies from society to society and can change over time.” ( ) Can change over time. The article goes on to say: “Gender identity refers to a person’s deeply felt, internal and individual experience of gender, which may or may not correspond to the person’s physiology or designated sex at birth.” Now, if we could only get everyone to believe this.

As a non-binary, a mother of a non-binary, and having family members that are transgender, I get very angry when I see/hear/learn of people badmouthing us and speaking from a place of ignorance. It angers me anyway, but makes it all the more worse.

As a mother, it pisses me off that there are still schools and people that won’t allow boys to have long hair, have earrings, or wear what they want. It pisses me off that these same people don’t allow girls to dress like boys, can’t show skin, get bad-mouthed and denigrated if they have tattoos or have weird hair. When will it stop? What right do these people, and PUBLIC schools have to tell people what they can and cannot do with their own bodies? Why do they feel they have this right? If the kids are clean and keep their hair neat, why make them cut their hair? Not to mention the fact that the ONE Latino that got suspended is 9 years old and he keeps his hair long due to his culture! I don’t even know when this shit about long hair started being as up to at least 1900, men wore their hair long (or a wig) and no one gave them problems. In the military, fine. Private or religious schools ok. But public schools? Hell no.

People need to stop being ignorant and educate themselves that gender and sex ARE NOT THE SAME THING and let people be who they are — as long as they are not hurting others.

Another thing that people need to get is, punishing kids because they wear their hair how they want or due to cultural beliefs, will NOT help their self-esteem or their mental health. The LGBT+ community and minorities struggle enough as adults – do you REALLY want to be the reason children grow up to have shit self-esteem and a ton of mental health problems? Cause this is exactly what is going to happen if people don’t stop seeing color, religion, gender, and sex and see people for WHO THEY ARE. I myself don’t see any of the above. If you are Christian and have a bad attitude, shitty personality, and don’t actually FOLLOW the words of Jesus, I will dislike you for the last 3 reasons….NOT because you are Christian. Color? I don’t see it. I see people…I see personalities. The color of your skin or different culture has NOTHING to do with someone’s ability to do a job or learn. And kicking kids out of school because they have long hair? That is just adding to the uneducated. It didn’t say, but I wonder – where most of the kids poor? If so, that is just helping fuel the discrimination against the poor. Poor does not = dumb and it shouldn’t! EVERYONE has the right to an education, no matter WHAT they look like.

Ok, so if you stayed this long, thank you for reading my rant. I hope I was clear on how I feel as I know sometimes I get all over the place. Things like this just really work me up and as I said in my intro post, I want to use this platform to help people and hopefully help myself deal with the insanity that is going on in our country.

What is your opinion? Do you have crazy things like this happening if you don’t live in the US? Let me know down in the comments and let’s build a safe community!

  1. Even though, there are the communities of LGBT, along with various organizations that vouch for them, in school, we are still, set up as either males or females, based off of our, biological external appearances, with a total disregard for the psychological states, and this will, only, hurt the younger, generations, despite how there are the laws that passes, to alloe for same-sex marriages to be, legalized right now.
